Bud grew up on Jones Avenue and was a 1965 graduate of Waynesboro High School, where he was a Purple Hurricane on the football team. Growing up, he was active in the First Baptist Church and had recently been attending Crossroads Baptist Church.
Bud began his military career on August 15, 1967, by joining the United States Air Force. Basic training began at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, TX. He attended technical school at Chanute Air Force Base in Rantoul, IL and graduated as a parachute rigger and ejector seat engineer for FA Jet Pilots. His first assignment was at Robins Air Force Base in Warner Robins, GA, where he was assigned to the 8th Air Force Strategic Air Command.
In 1968, he received his orders for Vietnam and was stationed in Cam Ranh Bay but then he was sent to Yokota Air Force Base in Japan for a special assignment. On December 2, 1969, he received orders to U-Tapao Air Force Base in Thailand where he spent a full year. In January 1971, after four years of service, he received an honorable discharge and returned to the Air Force Reserve.
Bud was a former salesman for Richmond Distributors and State Wholesalers in Augusta. His love of golf led him to become a professional caddy at the Augusta National Golf Club for over 36 years. He also caddied professionally at golf courses all over the country. He was always happy and proud to share the fact that he often caddied for Arnold Palmer. Bud was the founder and owner of his own golf putter company, ShurDrop Putter, LLC. Bud took great pride in sharing his knowledge of golf with young and upcoming aspiring golfers. It made him happy to hear about their success.
He loved his American Legion. For over 30 years, he built crosses and displayed them and flags throughout the city for the veterans on Memorial Day. In the last several years, he became part of the Wreaths Across America, honoring the veterans by placing wreaths on their graves at Christmas.
Bud was known for his kind heart and his love for his country, his family and for Jesus Christ. He was always eager to help his friends or a total stranger in any way he could. He would give you the shirt off his back and do without himself. His glowing smile was his trademark.
Rest in peace good and faithful servant.
