Walter T. Johnston

Walter T. Johnston, 93, child of the Great Depression and member of the Greatest Generation, passed peacefully on August 31, 2017 at Orchard Senior Living in Tucker, Georgia. The funeral service will be at 2:00 P.M. on Sunday, September 3 in the Chapel at Deloach-McKerley-Prescott Funeral Home in Waynesboro, Georgia. Visitation will precede the service at 1 P.M. at the funeral home. A graveside service will follow at Rose Dhu Cemetery in Vidette, Georgia.

Mr. Johnston served as Director of the Coastal Plain Regional Library System from 1968 until his retirement in 1987.During his tenure, with the help of Library Board members and the cooperation of the City Council and County Commissioners, grant funds were obtained for the construction or remodeling of library buildings in each of the five member counties of Berrien, Cook, Irwin, Tift, and Turner. Coming to Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in 1952 from the Mercer University Library, he served as the local college Librarian for 15 years.

An enlisted army reservist for nearly 10 years, Mr. Johnston served over three years in WWII as Chief of 4th Howitzer Section, Battery A, 861st Field Artillery Battalion, 63rd Inf. Div. with combat in Europe.During the Korean Conflict, he was on active duty over a year as Administrative NCO, G-1 Section, 301st Logistical Command.Born in Americus, Georgia, he received degrees from Georgia Southwestern, Georgia Southern, and Peabody College at Vanderbilt.He also attended major workshops at Emory, Georgia Tech, FSU, and IBM.Mr. Johnston had several articles published, served as a book reviewer for "The Library Journal" and acted as a consultant on a dozen library projects.

He served on various committees in the Georgia Library Association and was elected president of that organization for two years.The first meeting of the South Georgia Academic Libraries (now the South Georgia Associated Libraries) was held by Mr. Johnston at the Abraham Baldwin Library and he served as interim chair for that organization's initial meetings.

Although of Baptist heritage, he attended First Presbyterian of Tifton with his wife and for several years was a substitute teacher for the Challenger's Sunday school class.

Mr. Johnston was preceded in death by his father, Walter Johnston; his mother, Bertha Bell Johnston; and his beloved wife of 60 years, Ida Lee Mosley Johnston.He is survived by two sons and their families: Walter L. Johnston, wife Susan Huffingham Johnston, and children Rachel, Caleb, and Rebekah of Jacksonville, Florida and Verome M. Johnston, wife Erin Rogers Johnston, and children Katey and Caroline of Tucker, Georgia. He will be missed very much.
