Gertrude "Shirley" Dickens Holland Highsmith, 95, entered into rest peacefully Sunday, September 22, 2019.
She was born in Everett, MA on August 31, 1924 and had her first job at Cambridge University. In 1942, she married James Oliver Highsmith Jr., her husband of 50 years, and traveled the country as a Navy wife.
They settled in Brunswick, GA and later moved to McBean, GA in 1965.
"Miss Shirley" was a dedicated member of St. Michael's Episcopal Church of Waynesboro where she was famous for her homemade English muffins and cinnamon rolls at church bake sales. She was an avid reader, fabulous cook and ever-ready hostess. She made her house feel like home to anyone who crossed the threshold, and her dinner table was always open. She will be remembered for her quick wit, non-failing sense of humor and enormity of kindness.
She was preceded in death by her husband Jim and her oldest son, James Oliver "Joe" Highsmith III.
She is survived by her sons, Calvin Holland Highsmith (Antonette) of Jackson, S.C. and John Aaron Highsmith (Elizabeth) of Waynesboro, GA; grandchildren Leslie Highsmith Hutton (Randall) and John Daniel Highsmith, both of Waynesboro; and a great-grandson, Ryan Livingston.
Funeral services will be held 11:30 a.m., Friday, Sept. 27 at St., Michael's Episcopal Church, 515 South Liberty Street, Waynesboro, GA 30830. Rev. Larry Jesion, Priest-In-Charge will celebrate; Reverends Gene Paradise and Terri Degenhardt will assist. Following the service, the family will host a lunch in the fellowship hall for all in attendance.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to St. Michael's Episcopal Church.
