Robert Mitchell "Mickey" Horton

Jan 23, 1942 — Aug 6, 2026

Robert Mitchell “Mickey” Horton, 84, entered into rest Thursday, August 6, 2026. He was born in Millen to the late Soloman Braudice Freeman and Doris Butler Horton and was a longtime resident of Vidette.

Many of his favorite stories went back to his years in the Explorer Scouts. He started as a member of Boy Scout Troop 25 from 1953 to 1958 and later returned as an advisor to Post 25 Explorer Scouts in 1962. Those years gave him a lifetime of stories that he loved to tell and retell. In 1971, he married Linda Pittman, and with a daughter soon on the way, his years with the Explorer Scouts came to a close in 1972 as he began a new chapter as husband and father.

He has a lifelong love of tinkering with machines and figuring out how things worked. In 1968, he began a career repairing office machines, including adding machines, copiers, mimeograph machines, and typewriters, with Zip Office Equipment where he worked until 1998. He then worked for Pollack Company, retiring in 2009 after 41 years in the business. His love of fixing things didn’t end with his retirement. Whether it was an office machine, a small engine, or just about anything that needed repair, he was always willing to take a look – even up until his death, he was still tinkering with something that needed to be fixed.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Linda; and his brother, Braudice Freeman “Pete” Horton.

He is survived by his daughter, Belinda Conner (Jody); his son, Tate Horton; and his grandson, James Conner.

The family will receive friends from 6:00pm to 8:00pm Friday, August 14 at the funeral home. Funeral Services will be held 11:00am Saturday, August 15 in the Vidette Methodist Church, where he was a member for 50 years. Burial will follow at Rose Dhu Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Brian Daniel, Curtis Jenkins, Darrell Johnson, Rob Peel, David Raley, and Bill Tinsley.

The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude and appreciation to the hospice staff of Regency SouthCare Hospice and especially to Nikki Taylor Whigham, Patsy Silas, Sophia Davis, and Chaplain Katrina Salterwood.

Memorials can be made to the Rose Dhu Cemetery Fund, 7052 Hwy 24 W, Waynesboro, GA 30830.
