Paul Byron Dye Jr., 83, died December 18, 2016 at his home on Ivanhoe Plantation in Burke County. He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul B. and Alden Rowland Dye, and his brother A. Rowland Dye. He is survived by his wife, Louise Johns Dye of Waynesboro; two daughters from his previous marriage to the late Ann Richards Dye Harris: Molly Dye Franklin (George) of Atlanta, GA., and Suzann Dye Knap (Spencer) of Decatur, GA; a stepson, Vernon Roe Jr. of Fort Lauderdale, FL; a grandson, Andy Knap of Decatur, GA.; and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins. Mr. Dye was a farmer and a Southern Company retiree. Born in Burke County in 1933, he attended Waynesboro High School through 1949 and graduated from The McCallie School in Chattanooga, TN. in 1950. He attended the University of Georgia as an Army ROTC cadet and graduated in 1954 with a degree in agriculture. He enlisted as a captain with the United States Army and served in Fort Hood, TX, and Fort Polk, LA, where he was Aide de Camp to General of the 3rd Armored Tank Division. After his service, he returned to his family farm, Ivanhoe Plantation, in Burke County where he enjoyed hunting, fishing and studying history, particularly as it related to the Civil War and Native Americans of the Southeast. Mr. Dye was instrumental in Ivanhoe’s 2013 inclusion on the Georgia Civil War Heritage Trail, the State’s historic driving tour of Sherman’s march from Atlanta to the sea. He was a past president of the Georgia Field Trial Association, a founding member and past president of the Waynesboro Jaycees, a founding father of Edmund Burke Academy, and a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church of Waynesboro. Graveside services will be held 11 a.m., Wednesday December 28 at Magnolia Cemetery in Waynesboro with Rev. Earl Saxon officiating.
